Erno Rubik, the inventor of the cube, first created the prototype under the name "Magic Cube" in 1974 in Budapest, Hungary. An American manufacturer bought the license to the product and renamed it Rubik's Cube in 1980, creating a worldwide sensation. By the mid-1980s the cube's popularity was so great that the company estimated that one in five people in the world's total population had tried to solve it.
Since then, it has remained highly popular thanks to its unique eye-catching colors, affordable price, and difficulty level as a puzzle. His puzzle longevity is legendary, his fans are fanatical, and the world continues to be dazzled by truly incredible feats of puzzle solving, such as his fastest solving time of just 7.08 seconds by Danish teenager Erik Akkersdijk in 2008.
